Mornings, for most people, can be… Chaotic? Stressful? Eff-ing just straight up terrible? I think there is a whole section of memes on Instagram devoted to the #MorningStruggle. I get it. The morning struggle bus can be the real deal.
A few years ago, as I was diving a bit into this new concept of “epic-ally” living my life, I would often find myself (as I begrudgingly pulled my body from the bed) day dreaming about what my life would be like if I won the lottery… or essentially, didn’t have to rush off to work every morning. Basically, same thing. What would my days be like? Better yet- how different would my morning routine be?
While I’m sure it would be pleasant to enjoy a couple extra hours of z’s every now and then, sleeping away a day on the reg is NOT epic… and epic-ally awesome was, and always is, my goal. So, no- I decided it wasn’t about more sleep. Around this same, I had just stepped my toes into the world of meditation- just simple guided 10 minute meditations. I’ll get more into meditation in a future post (it’s a life changer, mannn. Slater from “Dazed and Confused” voice) but primarily, I was at a point where I recognized how much more psyched about life I became after a quick meditation. Less stressed, more hopeful, and filled with deeper purpose… pretty much the way I’d like to start every day.
I’ve kept a journal since I was 11 years old (ok, so I might have called it my diary until I turned 30), and often times as I meditate solutions, guidance, or even ideas float into consciousness that I like to transcribe afterwards in my journal. Sometimes I can write lucidly and endlessly for pages, and other times it’s just an elementary intention like -“Be kind to everyone you come into contact with today, especially those that aren’t kind to you” (That one recycles itself a bit!).
Anyways, back to my “fantasy morning scenario”- I ultimately decided that if I won the lottery, my morning would involve sipping an amazing cup of coffee, meditating for a bit, and then spending some time journal-ing. In my mind, that would be the most EPIC way to begin an EPIC-ally awesome day.
Wait, hold up. That’s it? Yep, that’s what my total Barbie’s Dreamhouse morning looked like. Y’all, I know I’m blonde. I hope you’re able to see where I’m going with this faster than I did.
What was holding me back from doing that now???? I didn’t need a bazillion dollars or excessive free time to do this?! All I needed was to get up 30 minutes earlier and the commitment to make my “dream life” my reality.
I’ve told this story before to others, and more often than not, I get a response like “yeah, well, I wish I could do that… but I’ve got kids to get out the door/a bus to catch/an hour commute”. Stop it. I drive over 200 miles a day, every day, for work. My husband and I make our own lunches every morning. We have to feed the dog. I have to take a shower, iron my suit, and attempt to not look like Sarah Mess-ica Parker too. We all do. We all have obligations and challenges we’re committed to before even taking a step outside our front doors.
So my point to this rambling story is two fold. 1, I strongly encourage y’all to adopt a morning routine that starts your day in the best way possible. Often times, when we leave the sanctuaries of our own homes each morning, we have no idea what will come forth that day. Calming your mind, and setting a few good intentions, helps to positively embrace the day- a day, that no matter what happens, is a gift. And 2, ask yourself- what does your “perfect morning” look like? What’s stopping you from making it a reality? In my case, the distance between dreams and reality wasn’t so far apart. : )
